The Phinney Fellowship
The Phinney memorial Fellowship supports the introduction of Greek in New England secondary schools.
Professor Ed Phinney was a major figure in American Classical Education, the author of the American
Edition of the Cambridge Latin Series and president of the American Classical League. The promotion of
the study of Greek in schools was a lifelong interest of Professor Phinney. The fellowship supports the
first two years in which Ancient Greek is offered as a standard academic course in the fellow's school by
underwriting that portion of the teacher's salary which is devoted to teaching Greek. In addition, the grant
provides teaching materials for the new program and supports tuition in a Summer program or a class in
Ancient Greek if the Fellow desires.
The Fellow's school agrees to continue the Ancient Greek program after the duration of the grant, should
the program be deemed successful. If the teacher already has a full teaching load, the grant moneys paid
to the school are to free funds within the school to hire a part-time colleague in order to offer the Greek
class as a full credit academic course. Applicants may be teaching in public, parochial, or independent
schools.
